Ergonomics

Visually impaired or not, multi-handicapped or not – we are all different and have different needs. Home environments, working places and places for school work should therefore be adapted to the user and for the purposes for which they are intended to be used for.

For technical vision aids generally and for magnifying camera systems in particular, the goal is for the user to attain the best possible performance in terms of reading and other tasks. (Read more under reading ability)

The consequences of incomplete testing, that perhaps entail an incorrect pattern of movement, with headaches, pain in shoulders, etc., as a result, is diminished performance, lower levels of motivation, and may sometimes require visits to a physiotherapist or doctor.

S = Sitting height (cm)
B = Table/desk height, upper edge (cm)
M = Monitor screen height (cm)
D = Distance to screen (cm)

The monitor screen should be placed so that sight is directed to the upper section of the screen and then obliquely downwards (0-20 degrees) in order to avoid eyes drying out.

A rule of thumb for the height of tables/desk is that there should be two (2) fingers space, or 40 mm between the lower edge of the table and the thighs.

Once the height of the table/desk and the position of the monitor screen have been determined, assess whether or not the working area under the camera is sufficient. Is it possible to leaf through the pages of a stiff binder or book? Is there space to write? Depending on the user’s diagnosis, it may be of advantage to place the monitor screen to the right or to the left. The screen should then be able to be separated from the camera (independent camera). Account should also be taken as to whether the user is right or left handed.
